Planning & Site Development: Recreation Development

This site has been superceded by a new Anderson & Associates, Inc. website. Please visit our new site: http://www.andassoc.com/

Anderson & Associates has extensive experience providing planning and design services for recreational facilities of various sizes and complexities including walking and bike trails, rail to trail conversions, golf courses, and linear parks and greenways. We have also performed engineering services for the development of sports facilities for many schools, colleges, and universities. Included in these projects were: mapping; design of water/wastewater systems and access roads; walkways, trails and picnic grounds; recreational fields, shoreline erosion control; construction administration, inspection, and site planning and development.

We have tremendous experience working with VDOT, both on enhancement projects and regular highway projects. Successful ISTEA and TEA-21 projects include the Huckleberry Trail, Richmond to Danville trail, Radford bikeway/trail, and train station renovations for the Towns of Orange and Purcelville. Our experience with VDOT and the long-term relationship we have forged with the Department allow us to "work with the system" to our clients' best interest. Additionally, we have completed a number of successful environmental documents and permitting applications by working with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and VDOT's Environmental Division. These relationships will greatly assist in the smooth flow of operations when acquiring government approval and environmental permits on your project. We have worked with the Virginia Division of State Parks since 1976 on a variety of recreation facilities. We have assisted them with development standards and design criteria for use statewide. Highlighted below are several recent projects:

Stafford Bicycle/Pedestrian Trail
Fredericksburg-Stafford Park Authority, Fredericksburg, VA

Design of Phase 3 of an asphalt bicycle/pedestrian trail that will connect downtown Fredericksburg to the historic Falmouth area of Stafford Co. The trail runs through a national battlefield park and two county parks. The design of the trail includes design two bridges, drainage structures, wetlands delineation, and the decent down a steep slope using wooden technology to weave through the trees to prevent the area from having to be cleared and graded. Anderson & Associates also created a project web site for the client's use and to keep the public informed of the project's progress.

Anderson & Associates is providing expert greenway planning and design services in the development of the Roanoke River Greenway. The study area for the Greenway includes a 10-mile long corridor along the Roanoke River through the City of Roanoke, and will connect key recreational facilities located adjacent to or within the corridor.

For the Location Study and Master Plan Development (Phase I), our team will conduct a thorough on-site evaluation of the corridor, gather extensive data, and develop of a GIS database for alternative analysis, public involvement, and environmental documentation. Preliminary Engineering of alternative greenway routes will be performed, including providing comparison analysis, preparing cost estimates, and quantifying impacts. A Master Plan will be developed and produced in hardcopy, HTML, and digital formats.
