The Building Inspector's Office is responsible for enforcement of the 1997 edition of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC) in New Kent County, Virginia. Building permits are required for all structures (except non-residential farm buildings) pursuant to the requirements of the VUSBC. Permit fees are based on Fair Market Value of the improvement. All inspections must be requested the day before required. No inspection requests are accepted for the next day after 4:00 pm. There is a re-inspection fee of $25.00 for inspections not ready or for second occurrences of a failed inspection.

The VUSBC references the following model codes:

Residential Construction: 1995 edition of the CABO 1 & 2 Family Dwelling Code with amendments or the 1996 edition of the BOCA National Building Code.

Commercial Construction: 1996 edition of the Boca National Building Code. Plumbing: 1995 edition of the International Plumbing Code with the 1996 supplement.
Mechanical: 1996 edition of the International Mechanical Code.
Electrical: 1996 edition of the National Electric Code (NFPA 70).
Basic unadjusted design values are: snow load: 20 psf, Wind speed: 80 mph (towers 100 mph), seismic zone: 1, weathering: severe, frost line: 16 inches, termite damage: heavy, decay: moderate, winter design temperature: 15 degrees F.
