Transportation Planning and Design can include a vast range of issues. While transportation planning and design generally brings to mind roadway transit, it more widely encompasses pedestrian movements, recreational facilities, and railroad infrastructure, as well. The ability to analyze and take into consideration all of these modes of transportation makes for an efficient and effective final product.
The experience that Anderson & Associates offers in each of these areas will provide you with a comprehensive project that will accommodate future growth. While the mode of transportation may vary, the goal of transportation planning and design remains the same - to provide a safe and efficient means of travel for the public. This is the foundation of every planning effort undertaken by our Transportation Group.
Anderson & Associates’ Transportation Group is capable of providing you with:
A&A’s Traffic Engineering began over a decade ago with the analysis of the intersection of College Avenue and Virginia Avenue, and the intersection of College Avenue and Commerce Avenue in the Town of Bluefield, Virginia. We provided an analysis of the existing traffic flow patterns, forecasted future traffic flows, recommended improvements, prepared construction and signalization plans, and provided construction administration and inspection.
Since this time, our experience has grown to include:
signal analysis, warrant analysis, timing, and design;
pavement markings and signage;
intersection analysis; level of service analysis;
traffic data collection, analysis, and forecasting;
traffic modeling;
maintenance of traffic planning; and
recommendation and design of roadway improvements.
Most recently we have been providing traffic volume forecasting, level of service analysis, and maintenance of traffic modeling for 17 miles of I-81 in Roanoke and Botetourt Counties. Our traffic engineering for this section of roadway provides VDOT and six design consultants with recommendations for improvements to adequately handle the capacity of I-81, as well as ramps, cross-roads, and intersections impacted by I-81 traffic.
A&A’s is experienced in designing all types of roadways for primary highways, urban highways, and secondary roadways. While the experience of our staff is impressive, the leadership role that our firm takes in many transportation projects is unmatched. We have taken a leadership role in practically every transportation program we have been involved with, including the Route 58 Corridor Development Program and the Interstate 81 Improvement Program, both in coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation. Our willingness to step-up and take a leadership role is symbolic of our commitment to the success of these transportation programs, and to the citizens who travel on these highways.
For over a decade, A&A has been providing transportation clients with surveys, designs, inspections and studies for facilities. The size and complexity of projects has increased substantially since our beginning and has grown to include over 500 miles of surveying/mapping and over 400 miles of planning/design. This team is accustomed to paying close attention to the details, including items such as:
drainage and stormwater management
pedestrian and bicycle facilities
erosion and sediment control
historic and environmental protections
karst topography
stream relocations
public involvement
long term maintenance
traffic control
heavy truck traffic
Much of our transportation experience is associated with mountainous terrain. To our credit, A&A has been selected over the years to perform roadway design services through some of the most difficult terrain in Southwest Virginia. It is through assignments such as Route 58 transcending Lover's Leap Mountain in Patrick County, Virginia, that A&A has developed its expertise and abilities to work effectively in the rugged terrain of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains.
A&A's roadway team takes our commitment to quality transportation one step further and provides clients with Value Engineering Services. Our in-house staff has the knowledge and experience needed to examine plans and field conditions and identify items that might be constructed differently to save time and money. Our experience in rugged terrain has enabled us to provide this service exceedingly well.
Anderson & Associates has gained valuable experience planning and designing trail facilities. Not only do we understand first-hand the value and benefits of a trail system, we have considerable support services that enhance the value of our experience. Our project experience includes planning and design components, as well as construction and grant administration.
Our experience with both trail planning and design provides us a unique perspective of both the big picture and the details. We understand how conscientious planning and design can effect and promote the ease of construction. Having led this process several times, we know what is required by State and Federal governments.
We also understand the importance of ground-work laid with public involvement and non-profit organizations and their input throughout the project development. The value of public support and favor is immeasurable in projects of this nature. A&A also has unique experience with TEA-21 funding through Transportation Enhancement Grants. Our broad base of understanding of the TEA-21 process comes not only from the grant application and design process, but also in the policy development of the legislation itself. A&A’s Vice President of Transportation, Tim Stowe, was instrumental in the development of the TEA-21 in Congress and was invited to testify before Congress on numerous occasions to make policy recommendations. Examples of our project experience include:
Anderson & Associates has a long history of providing surveying, planning, design and construction services for major transportation projects. A key part of our transportation services is heavy rail. We have worked on a wide variety of projects, including new mainline tracks, industrial sidings, and a variety of surveying assignments. We have also provided surveying services for train derailments and flood damage following Hurricane Floyd in North Carolina.
Anderson & Associates maintains a full complement of surveyors and engineers who are very experienced with railroad design procedures, as well as railroad safety and operations. We also understand the importance of coordinating the track work with other parts of the project, such as communications and signals.
