Anderson & Associates Takes Part in The ESOP Association's "Share the Wealth" Public Campaign by Donating Employee Ownership Book to Blacksburg Area Library Book Donation Commemorates National Employee Ownership Month

Blacksburg, Virginia -- Anderson & Associates took part in The ESOP Association's national public service campaign, "Sharing the Wealth," by having its employee owners donate a copy of The Ownership Solution to the Blacksburg Area Library to commemorate national Employee Ownership Month.

Across the country today, members of The ESOP Association, the national trade association for companies with employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), took part in the "Sharing the Wealth" campaign by donating a copy of the book The Ownership Solution to their local libraries. Written by Jeff Gates, the book provides insight into how to bridge the disparaging wealth gap in America, by creating more widespread ownership.

"The ESOP Association was created on the belief that by allowing employees to share in the wealth that they help create, we would build a stronger America. Today, in honor of National Employee Ownership Month, ESOP companies across the country are sharing their knowledge to further the dream of a stronger America through employee ownership," said J. Michael Keeling, President of The ESOP Association.

"For the past 11 years, our employee owners have had the opportunity to share in the wealth that they helped create through employee ownership," said Sarah Newbill. "Today, with this donation of The Ownership Solution, we are hoping other employees in Blacksburg will also be given this wonderful opportunity to share in the American dream of owning their companies."

Blacksburg-based Anderson & Associates, a civil engineering firm, formed its ESOP in 1987.

There are over 10,000 ESOP companies in the Untied States today with 10 million employee owners. These employees own more than $215 billion in corporate assets. ESOP companies are spread across the entire spectrum of American business. They include small, closely held corporations and large multi-national enterprises.

Over 1,300 ESOP companies, representing 850,000 employee owners, are members of The ESOP Association. The ESOP Association was founded in 1978 on the beliefs that employee ownership will improve American competitiveness, increase productivity through greater employee participation and strengthen our free enterprise economy.

Employee-owners Hold Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

In celebration of employee-ownership month, the employee-owners of Anderson & Associates, Inc., civil engineers, surveyors, planners, landscape architects, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 27, 1998, to officially dedicate their new 7,000 square foot addition in Blacksburg. The new wing will nearly double the existing square footage of the firm. "We wanted to make this ceremony special, and to promote that continued ownership feeling, we provided each employee-owner with their own pair of gold scissors to cut the ribbon," says Sarah Newbill, Public Relations Coordinator.

A major reason A&A has continued to grow over the last 30 years is their continual attention to providing opportunities for individuals to grow within the company. "I see a continual improvement in our ability to work together, both within teams, and between teams, even those in other offices. I think this growing ability will really serve us well in the future by allowing us to move the work to the people rather than moving the people to the work," says Ken Anderson, A&A President and CEO.

The new wing will be used to primarily house transportation engineering teams. Architectural Alternatives was the architect on the new wing, and Brooks Custom Builders was the contractor.

Each October, the company celebrates National Employee-Ownership Month. A&A has been an employee-owned company since 1987. Currently 34% employee owned, the firm hopes to be 100% by the year 2003. A&A celebrates their 30th year in business, and has branch offices in Middletown and Richmond, Virginia, Greensboro, North Carolina, and the Tri-Cities area of Tennessee.   For more information on employee-ownership, visit Anderson and Associates: Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs)
