Instructor Dr. Peggy Johnson, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Penn State University.
Introduction Stream modification activities are rapidly increasing across the country in a desire to rehabilitate stream corridors degraded by prior modifications, urbanization, land use changes, or natural flood events. The purpose of this two-day course is to introduce some of the issues and methods for modifying streams for the purpose of restoration, relocation, stabilization, or aesthetic improvements. Road crossings frequently intercept project stream reaches and must be incorporated into the stream modification design. Thus, a portion of the course will be devoted to problems encountered at bridges and culverts and methods for creating smooth transitions. The course will begin with a brief introduction to the characteristics of natural channels, flow hydraulics and sediment transport. These concepts will be used throughout the course to demonstrate the impacts of constraints, such as existing infrastructure, the selection of the channel design type and method, the need for rigid versus nonrigid channels and in-stream structures, and the implications at road crossings. The course will include an optional half-day field trip to a local stream site.
