James Hardie Project Receives State Award

Hardie.jpg (77841 bytes)Anderson & Associates, Inc. and the Town of Pulaski received the Merit Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Virginia, for the "James Hardie Building Products, Inc. Development Project". This award recognizes the innovative applications and sustainable design characteristics of the project. Anderson & Associates, Inc. was retained by the Town of Pulaski and James Hardie Building Products, Inc. to provide civil engineering and surveying services for design and construction of a 20-acre under-roof manufacturing facility.

The closing of other major manufacturers in Pulaski had delivered a blow to the local economy due to loss of jobs, loss of machinery and tools tax revenue, and a dramatic decline in water and sewer fees. James Hardie’s new Pulaski facility will hire over 200 full-time positions.

This facility uses approximately 500,000 gallons of water per day and contributes several thousand gallons per day in additional sewage flow: Both the water and sewer usage brings with it corresponding increases in revenue to the Town. In addition, James Hardie’s new machinery and tools, will bring in valuable tax dollars that will be used to benefit the Town of Pulaski as a whole. Because of the economic benefits of this project, the face of Pulaski will change. &

Lowell Bowman:  A&A Project Engineer

Lowell.jpg (182775 bytes)There’s one way to describe Lowell Bowman. He’s a worker. He started early when he was only ten years old, by working on his parents’ farm in Laurel Fork, Virginia. By the time he was sixteen, he owned a small sawmill where he worked regularly, worked as a surveyor for a local Carroll County surveying firm, worked on a dairy farm, and continued to help out around his parents’ property, all the while attending Carroll County High School.

After graduation, Lowell began studying at New River Community College in Dublin, Virginia. He soon transferred to East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee for one year before coming home to the Blue Ridge Mountains and attending Virginia Tech. While attending classes, he also worked for VT as a Civil Engineering Technician. One of the advantages of his job at Tech was that he was able to establish relationships with employees from local engineering firms that worked with the University.

Anderson & Associates was one of those firms, and Lowell clicked with the employees he met. He knew when he received his BS in Civil Engineering that A&A was the firm he wanted to work for. The environment of the company appealed to him, but the people at A&A are what really sold Lowell, and helped him decide to join the A&A family.

In his spare time, Lowell is always on the go. He enjoys carpentry and construction work, and spends much of his time making improvements to his home in Dublin, Virginia.

He’s recently begun utilizing his talents for community service. In January, Lowell was a key facilitator in forming a team at Anderson & Associates to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Lowell hopes to learn as much as possible from his coworkers and strives to continue to grow both professionally and as a person. &
