Expanding the Huckleberry

Whether you’re biking, jogging, or walking; bring your dog, bring your friends; the Huckleberry Trail is the place for you. Almost any outdoors enthusiast familiar with the Blacksburg, Virginia area knows about the Huckleberry. The asphalt-paved path that runs from the Blacksburg Library to the New River Valley Mall is a ‘must experience’. Huckleberry Trail Map outlining the phases each section is in

The Friends of the Huckleberry, a 501-C3 non-profit corporation, helped construct the trail, and now has more plans in the form of an extension. They’re trying to connect the Huckleberry along the west side of Route 460 to the Hethwood Trail and out to Jefferson National Forest. This would add about three miles of additional trail running from Christiansburg to Pandapas Pond.

The project is currently underway, and Bill Ellenbogen, President and driving force behind Friends of the Huckleberry, hopes to complete the project within a year. He notes that he’s not certain of this, as these projects sometimes take longer than anticipated. The extension is being built in sections, and at present, areas of the trail are in either the planning phase, design phase, or construction phase.

Along with designing the extension, Anderson & Associates has created a map outlining the location of the current trail as well as the extension, noting the phase each section is currently in. These maps are available at various locations in Blacksburg and Christiansburg, including the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, East Coasters, and the Blacksburg library.

The final cost of the extension has not been determined, but it is estimated between $500,000 and $1,000,000. The Friends of the Huckleberry have been securing monies through local, state, and federal government programs, but are accepting private donations as well. Friends of the Huckleberry is a 501-C3 non-profit organization, so contributions may be tax deductible. There are no administration costs, and 100% of donations go toward trail design or construction. Please send contributions to Friends of the Huckleberry, Inc., P.O.
