Bringing Water to Hungry Mother Residents

Hungry-Mother1.jpg (2193443 bytes)Hungry Mother State Park, located in Smyth County, Virginia is full of beauty and folklore, a winning combination that’s been bringing visitors to the area for years. Anyone familiar with the park knows that Hungry Mother’s appeal is evident. Boasting a lake and woodlands, the Park is a natural choice for visitors wishing to sample some of the many available outdoor activities including swimming, camping, hiking, fishing, and cabin and boat rentals.

And don’t forget about the Park’s history. According to local legend, a young mother named Molly Marley and her small child escaped captivity from hostile Native Americans, and followed the path of a small creek, later dubbed Hungry Mother Creek, until Molly finally collapsed. The child continued on her journey until finally finding help, speaking only two words "hungry mother." A search-party set out to find Molly, but was too late. They found the child’s mother lying dead at the foot of the mountain that is now known as "Molly’s Knob".

As the park’s popularity grows, so does it’s need for expansion, Anderson & Associates’ Beckley, West Virginia Office is assisting by providing water service to 48 new and existing customers. Completion of this project will relieve the Park of maintenance of the 2" and 4" lines that supply water since the construction of a new 6" line will improve reliability and water quality. The Park will be completing their own set of improvements to improve water service to the rest of the park facilities outside of the project area. &

Laura Friedel:  A&A Photographer & Marketer

Dale LehnigTo put it simply, Laura Friedel is a girl on the run. She is a Marketing Manager at Anderson & Associates, but if you ask her she’ll say, "I’m a photographer." While both statements are correct, the truth is there’s a lot more to this creative individual than her job description implies.

Originally from Salisbury, Maryland, Laura graduated from the University of Delaware where she double-majored in business with a concentration in marketing, and you guessed it, photography. After working as the Marketing Manager for a Structural Engineering firm in Maryland for two years, she and her fiancé Ron Matney moved to Blacksburg, where Ron, a Project Engineer for Schnabel Engineering, was transfered.

Laura began working for A&A in July, and the company has been able to utilize her many skills. Drawing from her marketing experience, Laura jumped in head-first at A&A by writing and putting together eye-catching proposals. But she’s also been able to make use of her photography skills by taking the majority of the pictures seen in the Ampersand, as well as taking numerous job-site photos.

Laura’s knack for photography has enabled her to open her own photography business, Laura’s Focus Photography. She specializes in weddings, portraits, landscape and still-life photos, and her business has been building rapidly in the Blacksburg area, although she still frequently travels to Maryland and D.C., where she continues to serve her client base.

Laura uses her own skills to market Laura’s Focus Photography. She conducts most of her business online via the website that she designed for her business, www.laurasfocus.com, where she has made samples of her work available to anyone in need of a photographer. She also designed and distributed her own brochures.

When she’s not on the run, you’ll most likely find Laura literally running. She enjoys getting out at least 3 times a week with Ron and their dog Axl, using the exercise as a means to keep in shape, and relieve the tension her busy schedule creates. &
