Tom's Creek Interchange Website

In February 2006, the Town of Blacksburg undertook the largest funded project in the Virginia Local Partnership Program. The $8.5M Tom's Creek Interchange project, funded through the Virginia Department of Transportation, will construct a new separated grade interchange project at the intersection of Route 460 Bypass and Tom's Creek Road.

Because of the location of this project in relation to flourishing neighborhoods and the student population at Virginia Tech, being able to communicate the details of the project, answer questions effectively, and distribute critical information about detours and traffic patterns, the Town and the construction team developed a website that was advertised to serve this purpose.

Brandon Steele, Project Manager for the Tom's Creek Interchange Project, and Town of Blacksburg Engineer, knew exactly what type of website was needed to effectively meet the needs of the community.  He wanted a site that was informative, functional, dynamic, and easy to navigate. He recruited Anderson & Associates to make this site in his mind a reality. A&A designed, implemented, and maintains the website (www.tomscreekint.com), which has experienced phenomenal hit rates and excellent feedback from a broad range of users.

The website was designed to feel as though it were a part of the Town of Blacksburg's homepage. It was kept simple in order to communicate the important information and make it easy for locals and residents to locate the information relating to the progress of the project, as well as the impacts the project would have on their daily travels and commutes.

In addition to locating detailed information, project maps, and schedules changes from the website, you can sign up for Blacksburg Alert, an email service that notifies recipients of critical information.

The schedule information is updated weekly and visitors to the website can find contact information for additional questions, facts about the project and its timeline, and photos that are being taken and posted as the project progresses.

Steele acknowledges the success that the website has been for the Town of Blacksburg. People refer to the site for answers to questions that they would normally ask Town of Blacksburg employees. "The site has been a vital tool for informing the public," Steele insisted. "People go to it because it is accurate."  &
