A&A’s Project Leadership Institute

by Valerie Beelman

Project managers at Anderson & Associates are receiving a unique opportunity for formal job training intended to enhance client service and further refine their skills. A&A will launch the inaugural Project Leadership Institute on June 21 for all current and upcoming project managers.

The concept for this training has been developing for some time. Leaders at A&A wanted a dynamic and hands-on approach to get participants involved and excited about the process. CEO Ken Anderson suggested working with Mel Lester of The Business Edge. Together, A&A and Mel developed a 12 month program to equip A&A’s employees with valuable tools for use in their every day work environment.

A&A’s Human Resources Team delivered a questionnaire to all project managers to determine what needs were most apparent. Human Resource Manager Courtney Bremner then completed a statistical analysis and a training schedule was developed. Courtney said, "The training was derived directly from employee needs. This needs assessment ensured that we will be focusing on useful topics for our project managers."

The training will begin by broadly examining the project manager’s role as a leader. Courtney said, "The project manager who embraces a leadership role will be much more effective with responsibilities such as project planning, time management, team building, and client service."

As the program continues, topics will include a client-focused sales approach, delivering superior client service, project planning and monitoring, managing financials, building a team, and leading a team.

The training will occur once a month anchored by Mel and supplemented with internal training. Mel has over 30 years of experience in the engineering, architectural, and environmental consulting professions. He specializes in helping technical consulting and design firms improve business performance by applying best management practices. Drawing on insights gained both as a manager and consultant, he has helped companies solve management challenges related to project delivery, business development, client service, leadership development, organizational effectiveness, human resources, quality assurance, behavioral safety, and personal productivity.

Project managers who complete a minimum of 9 training sessions will be eligible for graduation from the program. Graduates will receive a certificate and attend a celebration.
