Fast Action
by Valerie Beelman

In October, the Montgomery County, Va. Board of Supervisors agreed to purchase 86 acres of the Kipps Farm located behind the Blacksburg Middle School. Initially, the land will be used for a new football stadium and parking, although ample room will remain for the future growth of Montgomery County Schools.

This decision called for fast action from Montgomery County Schools Facilities Manager, Dan Berenato. The purchase agreement required the school system to submit a special use permit for the stadium within 30 days. The following weeks brought dozens of meetings between Town of Blacksburg officials, Montgomery County officials, school officials, the Anderson & Associates team, and the OWPR architect team.

A&A Project Manager Trevor Kimzey said, "We went through reams of layouts testing potential sites."

After a few weeks of discussions, a location for the stadium was decided upon. The planned location is the lowest, most concealed point on the property behind the new middle school. Trevor said, "This location is the best use of the land with many options for growth."

With the quick submittal of the special use permit, the project will phase into a three month process of more meetings and public hearings with more opportunities for the public to steer this development. Contact Trevor at Kimzey@andassoc.com for more details. &

Native Passion
by Heather Porterfield

Calvin & FamilyOne year ago, a new face joined the team in Anderson & Associates’ Tri-Cities, Tenn. office. A native of Surgoinsville, Tenn. and a graduate of East Tennessee State University (ETSU), Calvin Clifton accepted a Project Manager role with A&A. His background as Public Works Director for the City of Athens and the Water/Wastewater Manager for the City of Kingsport provides him with an understanding of the issues and challenges that our clients face on a daily basis. He said, "I like to think that my background and experience in the public sector brings a unique perspective to the firm and the way we serve our clients."

Reflecting on what attracted Calvin to A&A, he said, "The fact that A&A is employee owned continues to be important to me." He continued, "The fact that A&A has offices in three, soon to be four, states impressed me. We operate like a big firm but offer the client the benefits of a smaller firm with local presence."

In his role as Project Manager, Calvin interacts with clients on a daily basis, which is something that he has always enjoyed. He said, "Helping clients find the right solution to their problem is important to me." His dedication has motivated his involvement in a number of associations and community organizations. He serves as the East Branch Director for the Tennessee Chapter American Public Works Association (TCAPWA). He also spearheaded A&A’s involvement in the Kingsport Funfest this past summer, hosting the open house at the Netherland Inn.

Away from the office, Calvin spends his quality time with his wife, Leslie, and children, Megan and Peyton. When he has time to himself, you will likely find him relaxing at Edisto Beach or revving the engine of his motorcycle.&
