On the Right Track

Galyon DepotA train station originally built in 1927 by Southern Railway held its Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on October 21st of 2005. This train station is located in Greensboro, NC and it was dedicated to the City in 1978. The J. Douglas Gaylon Multi-Modal Transportation Center is named after the Chair of the North Carolina Department of Transportation and is one of several historical train stations that have undergone renovations using both Federal and local monies in the Southeast.

The multi-modal transportation center in Greensboro is a hub for Amtrak Trains, Greyhound buses, and City buses as well.

Anderson & Associates, Inc. worked alongside New Atlantic Contracting, Inc. and Gannett Fleming International Engineering, Inc. on this project that was destined to be on the track to success for all involved. This project consisted of the design of new tunnel construction, boarding platform and tracks, as well as historical renovations, interior additions, and the addition of passenger platforms.

This project may seem as though it would have been "cut and dry" but existing site conditions would call for some innovative ideas to provide the platform layout. During the first phase of construction, existing track was removed that would have controlled some horizontal and vertical elements of the layout. There were also active passenger trains onsite that began to affect the concrete formwork control.

Working with Dwayne Rakestraw and Troy Evans of New Atlantic Contracting, Anderson and Associates’ Bill Ciccolella modified the layout plan so that control was modified for construction of the platform. These points were critical as the platform sides and landing would have to be constructed precisely enough to allow safe boarding of passengers from platform to train.

Gaylon Depot InteriorThey determined that first constructing a footing for the sides of the platforms would provide the stability needed to overcome the settling of the formwork. Other challenges and adjustments were worked out and checked throughout the project to ensure the vertical and horizontal accuracy required.

Michael Davis, Anderson and Associates Project Manager said, "I saw a project that had a lot of thought put into the design, and overcame real world conditions to become a reality, due to individuals being adaptable." Michael said, "Bill Ciccolella is commended for going ‘above and beyond the call’ of duty. Bill applied his experience and ‘can do attitude’ to bring the design drawings, created by Jessie Hite of Gannett Fleming, to stakeout for construction."

Successful relationships were forged between Anderson & Associates and New Atlantic Contracting. As A&A and New Atlantic parted ways after the Grand Opening, Dwayne Rakestraw said, "We look forward to the next project."
