At Home in Alleghany County

by Heather Porterfield

Located on 1,200 acres in the rural Alleghany County mountains, the Boys’ Home strives to help young men become productive members of society, by developing their spiritual, mental, physical and social potential.

Since 1996, Anderson & Associates has assisted the Boy’s Home with Master Planning and Site Design for three new buildings. Several years ago, A&A also worked with the Boy’s Home and Alleghany County to extend water service to the facility, allowing the Boy’s Home to discontinue use of a private water treatment plant.

Currently A&A is working with the Boy’s Home to design a sewer force main connection and pump station. Their current system utilizes a lagoon system, which is being phased out by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. The connection to the County service will provide the Boy’s Home with the ability to meet future facility demands and growth. Once constructed, Alleghany County will assume responsibility for the pump station and it will become part of the County’s system.

The Boy’s Home is a private institution that provides care for young men who either have no suitable home or who have difficulties that might best be solved away from their immediate home. They are a privately funded organization, most recently raising awareness through Executive Director Donnie Wheatley’s Walk Across Virginia.  &

Catch of the Day

by Valerie Harper

Josh TurnerJosh Turner grew up watching his father and other family members working as contractors and decided early on that he wanted to be involved with the construction industry in some way. During his senior year of high school, he was accepted with early decision by Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and decided to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering.

Initially, Josh was introduced to Anderson & Associates during the later stages of his education and during his post graduation job search. He had also had some exposure to A&A through his work with Alleghany County, Virginia. Josh said he was drawn to A&A for the flexibility offered, the opportunity for continued education, and the ESOP.

As a Project Manager in A&A’s Fredericksburg office, Josh has ample opportunity to develop his skills in Land Development and Site Planning. He said, "Fredericksburg is rapidly growing and developing. With several clients, multiple projects, often for the same client, priorities change from day to day. I enjoy the fast pace and the challenges."

In the coming years, Josh is eager to continue his pursuit of his Professional Engineering License. "I look forward to steadily moving forward in position and responsibility as my career advances," he said.

Josh is in the process of buying his first home that he plans to share with his Norwegian Elkhound and cat. With plans to create a homestead that he will stay at for years, he is looking for a home on the Potomac River where he can nurture his love of fishing, kayaking, rowing, and swimming. &
