Town Run Moving Forward
by Valerie Harper

The Town Run Utilities Project (TRUP) is well under way in Winchester, Va. This project has been in development forPrecautions were taken to minimize the impact of construction on residents, motorists, and businesses. some time, but all involved are making swift progress and making an interesting discovery or two.

Anderson & Associates has been with this project from the beginning, supplying design and construction administration. In the second phase of the TRUP, crews will focus on enlargement and replacement of sanitary sewer, replacement of water mains, storm drainage improvements, the relocation of utilities underground, and the placement of decorative street lights and traffic signals to highlight this unique city.

Significant effort has been made to ensure residents understand the benefits of this project, as many are affected by traffic delays. During project development, special public meetings were held to disperse information and gather input from citizens.

As crews moved forward to upgrade waterlines along Amherst Street, they made an unusual discovery. A piece of wooden pipe, dating back to 1808, was found resting under the city street. This pipe belonged to the original water system of the city, considered to be one of the oldest public water systems in the country.

While the residents of Winchester will see the benefits of this project for years to come, Assistant Project Manager Kelly Henshaw looks to another gain. She says, "It’s just going to be nice to have the utilities underground, expanded sidewalks, and a better feeling of downtown with walkable and pedestrian-friendly areas."

Climbing on Up
by Heather Porterfield

Not many people can pack six careers into 21 years, all while staying with one company. Steve Spillane joined Anderson & Associates when the firm only numbered 12 employees and says "the dedication and professionalism" of A&A employees is what initially attracted him to the firm.

Currently, Steve is A&A’s Programing Manager and customizes programs and GIS applications for clients; however, his time at A&A has involved a number of "careers", as he likes to call them. Steve began at A&A as a drafter, when drafting did not involve computers. He continued along the design track until computers were introduced into the work environment. He began learning programming and writing scripts when he found himself doing the same tasks over and over again, which began a whole new segment of his overall career at A&A. Steve has mastered and created a number of programs that support A&A’s operations on a daily basis. While many of these programs have been handed over to Network Support team members, his personal mark and touch of humor are still evident.

Steve and his daughter Katie have enjoyed rock climbing together for over 15 years.Outside of A&A, Steve focuses his energy on his daughter, Katie, who just graduated from Blacksburg High School and will be attending the University of Southern California (USC) in the fall. Katie is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and received straight A’s throughout her high school career. Katie and Steve spend their time together doing what they love most – hiking, backpacking, and climbing. He made a deal with her 15 years ago that anything she could climb up he would carry her down but about 9 years ago their deal ended when Steve could no longer hold up his end of the bargain. Their most memorable trip was two years ago where Steve and Katie climbed Bell Rock in Sedona, AZ.&
