Glade Spring gets Revitalized
by Valerie Beelman

Glade Spring is a small town of roughly 1,500 people quietly tucked within the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Local residents will soon begin benefiting from years of planning to revitalize this charismatic township.

The Town Square of Glade Spring will see dramatic improvements in the upcoming months. Anderson & Associates provided the Town with a redevelopment plan that addressed the revitalization of buildings in Town Square, parking improvements, sanitary sewer, and drainage issues. Businesses still operate in buildings that echo the Town's history.

Utilizing the plan, funded by the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development through a Community Planning Grant, as a base, the Town has also received money through the VDOT TEA-21 program for improvements. The TEA-21 improvements will allow the Town to improve parking in Town Square, improve drainage, and complete some landscaping work. A stormwater collection system, also funded by VDHCD, is planned to alleviate the pooling of water and minor flooding of area homes.

The Town of Glade Spring has also acquired a building and is working on remodeling it to serve as the new Town Hall. The new Town Hall location will be just west of Town Square and will provide much needed room for Town staff.

Some residents will have new homes to enjoy in addition to a refreshed downtown. Work on the first phase of Gladeview Subdivision has begun. The initial phase includes 22 lots and will provide housing for low to moderate-income families. The VDHCD and People, Inc. have teamed up to provide funding for this project. Additionally, People, Inc. is working with A&A to develop master planning for future phases of this subdivision.

Finding Balance
by Valerie Beelman

People often greet the world ready to tackle it, often desiring fame and glory. One recently promoted project manager at Anderson & Associates has a much humbler and perhaps nobler goal. Stevie Steele strives daily for balance between his professional and personal life.

Stevie&Family.jpg (48494 bytes)"Finding that balance is probably the greatest challenge I will ever have. I want to be the best engineer, business person, husband, and father that I can be without compromising my integrity," Stevie says.

Stevie graduated from Bluefield State College in 2001 with an associate’s degree in Architectural Engineering and a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Stevie also has a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Mathematics that he received from Emory & Henry College in 1997.

Civil Engineering continually presents new challenges, something that Stevie says is the greatest and worst part of the job. He takes pride in fixing things that others believed were beyond repair. He adds, "I try to do the little things, the right way, every time."

Despite his dedication to his career, Stevie still makes time for his role as a devout husband to Michelle and father to daughter, Hannah. Hunting, fishing, golfing, carpentry, and yard work occupy Stevie’s free time.

Stevie has also devoted his life to the memory of his father who passed away in December 2002. Stevie says, "All that I am is a reflection of the man that he was and I am proud to carry the torch that he passed me until I am able to pass it to my daughter."&
