From Undecided to GIS Manager
by Valerie Beelman
Not long ago, Brandie Moody found herself baffled by one nagging question at college: what career would she choose? As a student with an undeclared major at East Tennessee State University, she had advanced as far as possible in math and science courses. Fortunately for A&A, Brandie found her match and graduated from ETSU with a bachelor's degree in surveying and mapping.

Brandie was recently promoted to GIS Manager in A&A’s Tri-Cities, Tenn. branch. She is currently developing Enhanced 911 for Lee, Wise, and Dickenson Counties among several other projects.Brandie.jpg (107724 bytes)

In addition to her GIS work, Brandie is a Practicing Land Surveyor in Training (PLSIT). She is also an active member of the National Emergency Number Association (NENA),

a group that strives for the realization of a universal emergency telephone number system.

To accompany her membership in NENA, Brandie is a steadfast advocate for GIS and Enhanced 911. Brandie said, "I find it very rewarding to know that we are developing a system, as far as Enhanced 911 projects go, that will save lives and make a whole county a safer place to live."

Brandie genuinely enjoys working with outstanding leaders at A&A who have fostered her professional development. Brandie added, "When you have the opportunity to work with the type of people that set an example of integrity second to none, and who encourage you to be your very best and beyond, you begin to start challenging yourself to be a reflection of them."

Beyond work, Brandie is studying to obtain a Certificate in GIS from Mountain Empire Community College in spring 2005. She and her husband, Wade, enjoy travelling, shopping, collecting Christmas ornaments, and spending time with family and friends. &

Radford Riverway Marks Grand Opening
by Bob Thomas & Heather Porterfield

On Saturday May 22, the residents, officials, and supporters of the City of Radford celebrated the Grand Opening of a hiking and biking trail, aptly named The Riverway.

Riverwaytunnel.jpg (149004 bytes)The Radford Riverway is a network of trails within the City of Radford that will provide access to key public facilities, such as Radford University, multiple city parks, the New River, schools, and residential areas. Phase 1 of the project included planning, design, and construction of the first 3-mile segment of the trail system.

Since 2000, A&A has provided Enhancement Grant administration, planning, design, and construction administration for Phase 1. This initial phase offered several unique planning and design challenges, such as retaining walls, traffic signals, traffic control, signage, a pedestrian underpass structure, and three bridge crossings of a FEMA-regulated stream.
Anderson & Associates worked closely with the local citizen advocacy group, Pathways for Radford, and city officials to integrate their ideas and suggestions during the planning and design phases. Pathways for Radford, a non-profit organization formed six years ago, has been a key component in the success of the trail by helping the city bring to life the greenways and trails that previously only existed in comprehensive plans and maps.

To learn more about implementing a greenway project in your community, contact A&A Project Engineer Jay McGuire at mcguire@andassoc.com or by calling 800-763-5596. Jay can also assist you in evaluating and preparing funding applications for your project. Happy Trails! &
