Scarlett Kitts: More than an Engineer
by Courtney Mills
In a profession that is historically dominated by men, Anderson & Associates is continuously adding to its pool
of talented female professionals. Scarlett Kitts, a graduate of Chattanooga Tennessee Tech University and a native of Tennessee, joined A&A in the summer of 2002 with her Civil Engineering degree and Engineering Intern certification.

Since joining A&A, Scarlett has continued her involvement with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). She currently holds the office of Treasurer of the North Piedmont Chapter of NSPE. Getting a breack from engineering, Scarlett also enjoys travel.

This past fall, Scarlett played an active roll in the "Future City Competition" as a mentor for Mendenhall Middle School 7th and 8th Graders. " I believe it’s important as a civil engineer to give back to the community and to show how civil engineering can work to better blend people's lives with their surrounding ecosystems," states Kitts. "When working with the Future City Competition students, I learned that younger generations already know about city structure and how it is crucial for positive growth". Scarlett also participated in "National Engineer’s Week" by donating her time to the Math Counts Competition.

Not only is Scarlett active in her professional organizations, but she is also an active and valuable team player in A&A's engineering department. Scarlett has been involved in several major projects, including the American Hebrew Academy and the Dan River Water Municipal Water System. She likes working for A&A because she enjoys the variety of projects that she works on and the support and guidance she gets from her peers and Greensboro Branch Manager Jim Billups.

"Our engineering professionals are a diverse group, giving us the advantage of looking at problems from several perspectives. Scarlett’s sincere concern for the environment, combined with her extensive participation in community activities and professional organizations, helps to ensure that A&A maintains the delicate balance among the needs of our own clients, the common good for our neighbors, and the ethics of our profession," states Jim Billups.

When Scarlett is not at work, she is out in the yard with her boyfriend, Derick, gardening and working on home improvement projects. She also enjoys experimental cooking, reading, and needle crafts. &

ESOP Perseverance
byHeather Porterfield
Anderson & Associates takes pride in being an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company. Through this plan, each full-time employee is an owner of the company, contributing to the overall success of Anderson & Associates, as well as controlling his or her own future. As we continue to strive for 100% employee ownership, it is important to stay abreast of the changing business environment and laws regarding ESOPs.Congressman Cass Ballenger (left) has been a great supporter of ESOP legislation.

Michael Davis, A&A Project Manager, is President of The Carolinas' Chapter of The ESOP Association and recently hosted the Southeast Regional Meeting. A highlight of this year’s meeting was a keynote address by Congressman Cass Ballenger (R-NC). Congressman Ballenger, who recently announced his retirement, has been considered a long-time ESOP "Super Champion" and has proposed pro-ESOP legislation for more than a decade. In honor of the work that he has done to further ESOPs, Davis presented the Congressman with a $1000 donation to his Foundation, which provides buildings and school supplies to children in Guatemala, Honduras, and Columbia.

Currently there are more than 11,000 ESOPs nation-wide, covering 8 million employees. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of establishing an ESOP, please contact Mike Davis at 336-931-0910 or at davism@andassoc.com. Additional information is also available at www.esopassociation.org. &
