Above Average: John Appelquist
by Kelly Connoley
In this day and age, for an employee to maintain a 20-year tenure with a company is quite an accomplishment, but that’s exactly what A&A Blacksburg employee John Appelquist has achieved.

A full-time construction inspector since January 1st, 1984, John has worked on many projects over the years. A surprise celebration was held on January 16, 2004, in recognition of his many accomplishments and contributions to the company. Paul Grimes, Chief Inspector, cited John’s attention to detail and easy-going disposition as commendable assets. As aappelquist alone.jpg (5772 bytes) token of our appreciation, John was presented with an engraved watch.

Originally from Joliet, Illinois, and currently residing in Christiansburg, Virginia, John and his wife Debbie have twin sons, Daniel and William. Appelquist was very involved with the Huckleberry Trail, which extends six miles from the Montgomery/Floyd Regional Library in downtown Blacksburg, across the southern portion of the Virginia Tech campus, through Montgomery County, to the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg. He assisted in bridge construction for the trail and volunteered time clearing brush with other A&A employees and friends. His true loves are being outside and traveling.

Celebrate Virginia: First of its Kind
by Lee Williams
Just south of Washington, D.C. in Fredericksburg, Virginia, a new development is taking shape. By combining commercial and corporate development with recreation, entertainment, and green-space in a single 2,400 acre site, Celebrate Virginia is the first development of its kind.

Celebrate Virginia straddles the Rappahannock River. On the Fredericksburg side, the development will offer hotels, a convention center, restaurants, museums, and entertainment venues. On the Stafford County side, a golf course, active adult retirement community, retail shops, and an office park are planned. The development will also host an Eco-Tourism Center that will preserve and feature the beautiful Rappahannock River.

Anderson & Associates has been working with Silver Companies on several different engineering features for the development, including the design of a regional stormwater management facility and irrigation ponds. The irrigation ponds will serve both the newly constructed golf course and proposed future courses.

The Celebrate Virginia Parkway will expedite access to the newly constructed Cannon Ridge Golf Course (at left). The Celebrate Virginia Parkway and connector roadway will expedite access to the newly constructed golf course. For this portion of the development, A&A prepared erosion and sediment control plans for the Parkway, design plans for the connector road, and plans for preliminary grading, erosion and sediment control design, and drainage design for over 90 acres adjacent to the Parkway. To help further the progress of the development, the erosion and sediment control plans were prepared to begin grading operations before the final roadway plans were approved. The roadways were designed, approved, and constructed in less than one year.
