Partnership On-Track
by Kelly Connoley
For more than 10 years, A&A has been providing services to CSX Transportation through on-call contracts. Throughout the years, we have essentially become an "extension" of the CSX Richmond, Virginia District Office staff. Currently teamed with DMJM+Harris out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, we provide coverage for Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland. Over the past four years, Jacob Craig has worked on CSX project assignments and assumed the position of A&A Project Manager this past summer.A&A provides construction monitoring services at a site in West Virginia

Services under the contract include preliminary engineering, construction representative services, surveying services, and emergency services. The on-site construction representative has the ability to make an engineering decision in the field, saving time and money.

One very important aspect of our relationship with CSX Transportation is the safety training that we provide to our employees. In addition to being Project Manager, Jacob is also a CSX certified instructor. This enables A&A to efficiently conduct in-house training in all of our office locations.

Whether it is engineering, construction monitoring, or surveying, our services are ready to be utilized when needed. For example, Jacob received a message after arriving home one evening that our services were needed in Cumberland, Maryland, and CSX requested that we mobilize to their site that evening. Jacob and two survey crews arrived on-site at approximately 1:00 AM. The crews worked until 5:00 AM and got only an hour or two of rest before gearing up to go back to the site. This responsiveness further demonstrates our continuing commitment to our clients.

Please contact A&A Project Manager Jacob Craig to learn more about how he can assist you with railroad coordination, engineering, and surveying needs. He can be reached by e-mail at craig@andassoc.com or by calling 800-763-5596. &

Robert Conn- Advancing Development
by Courtney Mills
After five years of working in the field of construction as a laborer, Robert Conn decided that he was going to finish what he started. His love for math and problem solving led him to a career in the engineering field. Having finished his Civil Engineering degree at North Carolina A&T State University in 1995, Robert joined A&A as a Project Manager in February of 2002. As an engineer, he enjoys seeing the long-term benefits of his work and knowing that there is the potential for those benefits to continue for decades to come.Robert and his wife Amy, with Cody (13) and Alexis (1).

Robert notes, "One of the many reasons I enjoy working at A&A is that I like the responsibility that my position gives me, and I take pleasure in knowing that my decisions matter." He adds that the challenges of keeping his team members productive, getting work in the door, and making his work as cost efficient and as professional as possible keep the job interesting. "I have a hard time with the word ‘can’t,’" says Robert. He also values the flexible work schedule of A&A, which allows him to stay at home with his children if they are sick, as well as attend their school functions without being penalized.

When Robert is not in the office or at a job site, he is at home with his family. Robert and his wife Amy enjoy spending time with his son Cody, who is 13 and their daughter Alexis, who just turned one. Robert enjoys cooking for his family and grilling out no matter the season.
