Emily Prince: Making a Difference
by Kelly Connoley
Emily Prince, A&A Blacksburg Office Intern, had a strong interest in math as a
high school student. After working with an uncle in the building construction industry, she decided to pursue a career in engineering. She believes that by helping to build quality buildings and facilities, she can better the community in which she lives. Also, she emphasizes that keeping safety first benefits the general public.

emily.jpg (38704 bytes)While working at A&A, Emily has gained first-hand knowledge of the day-to-day schedules of engineers. She’s also had the opportunity to learn more about the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Imagery work. Her work has involved a lot of display production, and she enjoys seeing the visual parts of a project come together.

Emily was recently awarded the prestigious Vecellio Scholarship for the 2003-2004 school year. The scholarship is based on leadership on campus, quantitative cumulative average (QCA), grades in civil engineering classes, and teacher references. She was recognized at a recent distinguished professor lecture and will have her picture displayed in Patton Hall.

A native of Knoxville, Tn., Emily will graduate from Virginia Tech in December 2004 with a Civil Engineering major and a minor in Business Leadership. Very involved in campus activities, Emily has served on the panhellenic council for Chi Omega as community relations chair, and represented the sorority on the Homecoming Court. Included among her hobbies are scuba diving and traveling. For more information on beginning an internship such as Emily’s, contact Stacye Lucas, Human Resources Manager, at 800-763-5596 or by e-mail at lucass@andassoc.com. &

Spirits of the Blue Ridge
by Heather Porterfield
Take a nice leisurely drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and you might be surprised to find a very popular winery nestled amongst the hills and valleys near Rocky Knob in Floyd County, Va. There on top of a knoll sits the Chateau Morrisette Winery and Restaurant.
The winery and vineyard were founded in 1978 as a labor of love for the Virginia Mountains, wine, and agriculture. Chateau Morrisette's first commercial wines were produced in 1982 with a production of 2,000 gallons. Since then, the popularity of their wines and the increase in their production to over 150,000 gallons has necessitated many improvements.

morrisette.jpg (130508 bytes)Recently, Chateau Morrisette retained Anderson & Associates to design improvements to their water system. These improvements will provide for two water storage tanks – one for potable water and one to be used initially for fire protection. After analyzing their future goals for growth, the fire protection tank was designed so that when their continued growth requires additional water supply, that tank has the option to be used for potable water. A&A’s design also includes linework and modifications to an existing pump station.

Even though the Chateau sits just outside of the reach of the Blue Ridge Parkway regulations, the owners desired that the tanks have minimal impact on the viewshed for travelers using the Parkway. The tanks were designed with a height of approximately 20 feet and have been strategically placed behind a grouping of evergreen trees. A&A will assist the owner with choosing a tank color that will blend with the surroundings.

The Chateau is an enchanting place to visit and an amazing operation to witness.
