Richard Blake: In the Field
by Heather Porterfield
After 35 years of surveying and mapping, Richard Blake continues to strive in the field of land surveying. His career
began in the United States Army where he learned Geodetic Survey in Defense Mapping School and then utilized his skills to perform boundary surveys for the government. Prior to the Gulf War in 1991, Blake assisted with mapping all of Saudi Arabia as well. At the time that he was discharged from the Army, Blake served as Sergeant First Class (SFC).

Whether it is surveying or football, Richard Blake takes field time seriously!"Although you work at solving problems you encounter over many years, you seldom encounter the same problem twice," comments Blake. The challenge and variety of surveying is what continues to fuel his passion for the profession.

Since joining A&A earlier this year, Blake has served as Survey Manager at A&A Fredericksburg office. In this position he is responsible for all surveying efforts undertaken by A&A’s Fredericksburg office, including management, as well as field and office tasks. He brings almost eight years of surveying experience in the A/E/C industry and thrives in the fast pace of a private-sector professional services firm. Blake is a Licensed Land Surveyor in Virginia and has completed the Virginia Land Surveying Apprenticeship Program.

A Portsmouth native, Blake enjoys swimming, bowling, horseback riding, and playing cards in his spare time. He also is a die-hard Washington Redskins fan and you can often find him cheering in the stands!

Recruiting - The A&A Way
by Kelly Connoley
At Anderson & Associates, we have a unique philosophy when it comes to recruiting. This philosophy is driven in part
by our company culture. Well known for forward thinking and implementation of policies before they become the popular trend, A&A strives to hire people who are thinkers and self-motivated doers, but who are also able to thrive and work within a team structure.

Our immediate goals for recruiting include hiring current college students as interns on an actual production team and growing that relationship through graduation when the possibility of full-time employment then exists. This is a win-win Brad Stipes, A&A Vice President, speaks to a group of VT students touring the office.situation – not only does the student get real hands-on experience while still in classes, the company is able to foster a relationship and teach leadership and project management skills. This enables our employees to move into positions of responsibility often much earlier than they would in other firms.

Corporate officers play a key role in the development and mentoring of our Project Managers into leaders. They act as a coach, helper, and cheerleader to encourage and motivate employees to succeed to their fullest potential. We have found that personal attention and mentoring is the best tool for educating employees and developing leaders.

While we recognize that not every individual can or will excel under these conditions, we have found that those that do are true leaders and have made a commitment for long-term success with our company. It is these individuals who will be the future leaders of Anderson & Associates and who truly understand the corporate philosophy and values.
