A New Look!
by Susan Moore
Recently, we redesigned our WebGIS.net to include some new features, and to meet current World Wide Web
Consortium
(also known as W3C) Standards. Meeting these standards ensures greater accessibility for visually impaired users and allows for increased portability across web-enabled devices. The site utilizes a browser-based content management system developed by A&A, which allows our GIS staff to update content without special desktop software.

At www.WebGIS.net users can learn more about GIS functions on the web, as well as visit sites developed by A&A.Some features you will want to explore include links to our products and services, a link to brief biographies of our GIS team, a listing of our clients, and a GIS in the News section that includes articles, presentations, and press releases. Also included are some useful tools for estimating the cost of having a GIS for your location, a cost comparison tool, and some sample contracts and requests for proposals.

For those of you who would like to find out more information about GIS and the terminology used, there is an introduction to the concept, a glossary, and links to even more resources. Most importantly, don’t forget to check out some of the actual GIS sites – you can look at sites
for localities throughout Virginia and North Carolina!

Riverway Begins Construction
by Janette Brown
It is said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. On September 30, 2003, the culmination of
many factors brought about the beginning of a journey for the citizens of Radford, Va. On that day, the new Bikeway/Walkway trail system, known as the Riverway, celebrated its groundbreaking. With Anderson & Associates there every step of the way, the Riverway was the vision of the City and a group of citizens who later formed the organization
The groundbreaking ceremony highlighted the teamwork and community partnerships that have made the Riverway a reality.Pathways for Radford. A&A assisted with the writing and submittal of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) grants and worked on designing and implementing the Riverway in a way complementary to the existing landscape. We are also administering the construction contract.

Riverway trail will parallel the New River, beginning at Radford University’s Dedmon Center, traveling up to Bisset Park, and then continuing through the new tunnel under East Main Street to Wildwood Park. It will then travel through the park to Sundell Drive for a total length of approximately 2.5 miles. The tunnel under East Main Street, also designed by A&A, is currently being constructed by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as part of the current Memorial Bridge project. Construction of the Riverway is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2004.
