Solving Problems- Designing Safety
by Kelly Connoley
Roger Weadon, Greensboro Project Manager, originally decided on engineering as a career choice in part due to the
influence of his father, also an engineer. A native of Greensboro, N.C., Roger received his BS degree in Civil Engineering from UNC Charlotte. Roger entered the NCDOT training program, and when a spot opened in the Stormwater/Drainage discipline, he elected to give it a try. He worked with NCDOT for eight years, and attained the status of Professional Engineer (PE) in 1996. Prior to joining A&A in January of 2001, he also worked in the Environmental Department of the City of Greensboro for three years.

The Weadons_small.jpg (23021 bytes)Roger feels that his chosen profession benefits the general public in a fundamental way. When he is designing a stormwater or drainage improvement, he is essentially designing safety and protection for the homes, possessions, and families in that particular area. He thinks the best engineering often goes unnoticed by the general public, "When things are going well, engineering is not something people think about. It’s when things go wrong or problems come up that people notice."

Solving problems, however, is one of the things Weadon enjoys most about his job here at A&A. Identifying the problem and developing the best and most cost-effective solutions is challenging – but also gives him the satisfaction of a job well done. Since joining A&A, Roger feels he has had the opportunity to gain a broader range of experience, as well as understand the comprehensive picture of Land Development. He has also learned project management from the private industry standpoint.

One of the things he enjoys the most about his job is being able to "sink his teeth" into a stormwater design. He also finds it rewarding to be able to mentor and advise the junior engineers he comes in contact with.

When not at work, Roger enjoys spending time with his wife Beckie, and children Reanna and Trayce. It’s obvious when speaking with him that family time and his commitment to his church and related activities take a very high priority on his list. Also part of the family are two Shetland sheep dogs named Jake and Suzie, and a Persian cat named KC. During the interview with Roger, I found out that he has written a fiction novel (as yet unpublished) and also likes being able to apply his communication skills on a day to day level.

Leading the Way for GIS Graduates
by Jennifer Dobson
Jess Hansen, GIS manager of A&A’s Tri-Cities, TN office, has worn many hats over the past few years. In addition to
numerous responsibilities as GIS manager, Jess is also involved in the GIS learning program at Mountain Empire Community College (MECC), located in Big Stone Gap, Va., in the role of course instructor. Jess earned his Master's degree from East Tennessee State University with an emphasis in GIS and Surveying, and taught for a year at ETSU. He joined A&A in June of 2000, and after working here for a year and a half, Jess decided to take on the additional role of course instructor at MECC. As an instructor, Jess teaches several GIS courses, which are designed to lead to a certificateMECC's first class to earn GIS certificate. in GIS. According to Jess, "GIS is a multidisciplinary field where education is vital and the courses at MECC offer that education in an environment where students can learn at their own pace and on their own time".

Congratulations are in order for the eight students who recently graduated from MECC as its first class of students who received their Geographic Information Systems professional certificate. According to Jess, he "really enjoys working with the students and seeing their learning progress". More information about the program can be found at http://www.me.cc.va.us/.

One of the best ways to be sure that one’s chosen field of work will continue to thrive and improve is to be actively involved in its development. Jess has taken this role seriously, and the proof of his commitment can be seen in his students. A&A supports its employees who work to make a difference through their interaction in the lives of the people around them and with the communities in which they live and work. &
