American Hebrew Academy Opens Doors

As children all over the country start back to class, students at the American HebrewThe American Hebrew Academy Dining Pavilion features a retaining wall of imported Jerusalem stone. Academy in Greensboro, N.C., are beginning a new chapter in history. Seventy-seven 9th and 10th grade students recently began classes at the nation’s only resident Jewish high school.

The school will offer a curriculum based upon both traditional college preparatory and Jewish studies.

Designed by architect Aaron Green, a former associate of Frank Lloyd Wright, the American Hebrew Academy is a state-of-the-art facility situated on 100 wooded acres. The $100+ million campus was entirely funded by anonymous donors. In addition to three academic buildings and 37 student residences, the campus will include a synagogue, a high technology media center, an athletic center and natatorium, and a performing arts center among other buildings. When completed in approximately five years, the Academy will accommodate 800 students in grades 9 through 12.

A&A Project Manager Jason Herman admires the American Hebrew Academy project during a recent site visit. With an emphasis on the environment, the facility boasts the largest geothermal exchange heating and cooling system in the country. The system uses relatively constant subterranean ground temperatures to heat or cool a closed water system. Additionally, no petroleum-powered vehicles will be allowed on the campus proper, and student and faculty movement on the campus will be limited to pedestrian traffic, electric vehicles, and bicycles.

Anderson & Associates is performing survey, site planning, and civil engineering services for the construction of the academy. Working in cooperation with several engineering, architecture, and construction firms, A&A coordinates civil engineering design and construction surveying for the site work and infrastructure, including detailed site grading and erosion control, internal roads, water, sewer, storm drainage, and the dramatic campus entrance features.

"The American Hebrew Academy project touches so many different service teams in our firm," said A&A Project Manager Mary Ann Bonadeo. "The wide array of engineering and surveying services available through A&A’s offices is significantly beneficial to the project’s success."

A&A Goes to Bat for Little League

Anderson & Associates is helping young people in Stephens City realize their baseballCommunity and A&A team members broke ground on the Frederick County National Little League complex in Stephens City. dreams. In the spirit of community, the A&A Middletown office worked pro bono to design the Frederick County National Little League (FCNLL) complex. Local community and A&A team members recently broke ground on the 12-acre complex, which will include four baseball fields and a two-story clubhouse complete with pitching mound, batting cages, and office/recreational space.

The Little League complex is part of Stephens City’s comprehensive plan; and town officials have offered to lease the site to the FCNLL for $1 annually for the next 40 years. FCNLL officials hope to have the complex completed in two years, with costs ranging from $500,000 for a scaled down version of the plan to almost $2.5 million.

If you are interested in supporting the FCNLL with a financial contribution, please call Clay Simmers at 540-869-5032 or contact the A&A Middletown office at 540-869-2501. &
