A&A Provides Answer to
Trail Challenges
| Residents of Stafford County and Fredericksburg, Virginia will soon enjoy hikes
and bike rides along the Fredericksburg-Stafford Park
Authority (FSPA) Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail. The
FSPA Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail, which is currently under construction, will connect
downtown Fredericksburg with the Falmouth area of Stafford County. The trail is a VDOT TEA-21 project, which means the project
provides alternate transportation for residents.
"The trail provides a way for
people to get around without driving," explained Bill Ross, Director of the FSPA. "This is
the start of an alternate transportation system."
The trail also serves the community by allowing residents
to enjoy the beauty of the area without negatively impacting the natural surroundings. The
trail passes through two parks, and provides views of a Civil War encampment and sites
where Native Americans crafted arrowheads.
The three-mile trail is the first of its kind in the area.
While the public supports the concept, the $1 million project has not been without
controversy. Because of the steep topography of the trail, FSPA would be forced to cut
down many trees in the parks mature forest if standard trail building methods were
utilized. This caused a public outcry that put a halt to the project.
As a result, a trail subcommittee was formed to include
the public. Together, the group faced the challenge of how to design the trail without
disturbing the environment.
"The subcommittee was the key to
moving the project forward," said Ross. "The members are dedicated to working
for the good of the community."
Anderson & Associates is providing professional
engineering, surveying, and landscape architectural services for phase three of the FSPA
Bicycle and Pedestrian Trail project. This area of the trail features high slopes and
stream crossings, which pose challenges
to trail design. In response, A&A is assisting the FSPA
in designing a wooden trail, which
will be built along the existing land contours.

Todd Wood Sets "Sites" on Tenn.
When Todd Wood was offered a position with Anderson & Associates, he accepted not only a
change in jobs, but also a change in scenery. Todd, a native of Annapolis, Maryland,
recently relocated with his family from the flat, sandy beaches of the Chesapeake Bay to
the rugged mountains of Tennessee.
Todd
specializes in land development. He has 15 years of experience, having served as a design
engineer, project engineer, and project manager with firms in Maryland. Most recently,
Todd was a project manager with C.D. Meekins &
Associates, Inc. in Annapolis, where he managed 15-30 projects at any given time.
A graduate of Johns
Hopkins University with a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Todd holds his
Registered Professional Engineer license in Maryland and Virginia, and is currently
working toward his Tennessee licensure.
"My goal is to expand our site development
work in Tri-Cities by bringing in work from local builders and developers
residential, commercial, and industrial," explained Todd. "I want to make a name
for A&A in the land development sector by doing very thorough site development plans,
and presenting them in an impressive fashion. I am particular about the quality of the
plans."
A detail-oriented person, Todd naturally
gravitated towards engineering. However, Todd also has a creative side, which he uses to
benefit clients in the planning and layout phases of land development.
When Todd isnt busy at work, he channels
his creative energy into numerous hobbies, including landscaping, photography, cooking,
piano, and golf. But his favorite hobby is playing with his three daughters, Alaina,
Ashlyn, and Madelyn.
"Our familys move to Tennessee has
been great," said Todd. "Everyone is so friendly."
