Steve Jones:
Building Up to

by Su Clauson-Wicker

Before long, Blacksburg residents will be able to monitor ongoing town council meetings
from their home computers. They also will be able to go online to check public records and ask questions of town officials, even those who are hundreds of miles away at meetings.

"We’re working on our e-government strategy," says Steve Jones, Blacksburg’s Director of IT (Information Technology). "Our infrastructure is not ready yet, but we’re at least halfway there."

In the near future, the town plans to offer municipal services via the Internet — utility billing services and payment, Parks and Recreation program registration, parking ticket payment, building permits, to name a few.

Jones has been working with Anderson & Associates and several vendors since last summer to implement a networking infrastructure overhaul — and to link together 11 sites and the 240 employees in the Town of Blacksburg’s government. When it’s finished, all town facilities will be tied together on a common network with Internet access, file sharing, and e-mail. The system will enable employees to work from anywhere as long as they have a PC and an Internet connection. The various dial-up and low speed access systems are being replaced with a T-1 digital service connection and wireless technologies. The T-1 alone will save the town about $10,000 a year by eliminating 65 modem connections across the town.
