Elizabethton in Carter County, Tennessee, may be small as cities go, but it has metropolis status on the information superhighway.

The Elizabethton/Carter County Economic Development Commission put up more than 127 pages on Internet's World Wide Web last fall, making it one of the largest economic development Internet sites in the nation. The site (http://kpt1.tricon.net/Org/eccedc) offers detailed community and economic information to consultants, site selection, real estate and corporate executives throughout the world.

Potential clients can not only view the site electronically, but in less than 24 hours, can be holding a binder full of information on Carter County, says Keith Mulligan, director of the Northeast Tennessee Economic Development Commission and founder of the web site.

"If they fill out and e-mail us an on-line form by clicking on a box at the site before 4:30 p.m., we can send a community profile special delivery to their offices by 10:30 the next morning. We can track the package on Internet to see whether they received it and follow up with a personal phone call," Mulligan says. "If it's not in their hands yet, I can direct them to the person in their company who signed for the package."

Mulligan says the web site was instrumental in helping a local company to receive a multi-million-dollar contract recently. In other cases, small businesses and private citizens have been attracted to the northeast Tennessee county.
