Jerry Burgess: Growth and Green Fields in Botetourt (continued from front page)
Because of Botetourt's sensitivity to cultural and historical issues, all cemeteries and many old foundations on the site will be preserved, as will large tracts of open land. "It's a different concept in business development," Burgess says. Growth has driven other Botetourt County projects, including the construction of two middle schools, planning for a new elementary school, and a plan to expand water and sewer services along the Route 220 corridor. The county is also building a new landfill and implementing an E-911 system.
To wind down, Burgess does aerobic work-outs with weights or hikes. He and his wife, who have always been bed-and-breakfast aficionados, still find new B&Bs to explore in western Virginia.

Project Manager Rob Lowe, EIT
CAAA, HAPs, NAAQS, SIP, NSPS, Title III, Title V, construction versus operating permits _ does this all sound confusing? The 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, (CAAA) are more than likely, the most difficult and confounding environmental regulations yet to be written. If your facility has air emissions, be aware that an air permit may be required. Facilities that were previously "grandfathered" into the air permit program may also need to apply.
With the addition of A&A's newest environmental engineer, Rob Lowe, the firm now has the capabilities to provide assistance with the air permit procedure. Lowe is experienced in conducting emissions inventories, modeling studies, technology reviews, as well as permit application and review experience.
Whether your company is a large industrial facility or a small dry cleaner, the Clean Act Amendments could impact your business. For more information contact Rob Lowe at (800) 763-5596 or through Internet e-mail at lowe@andassoc.com

A&A Richmond Project Manager Scott Courtney talks to the Blacksburg Branch via video conferencing
In an effort to improve communications and to better share resources between the offices, A&A's Blacksburg and Richmond branches have installed a PC-based video conferencing package. It's as simple as making a phone call.
Not only does this system provide video (15 frames/second) but also allows for application sharing. Now, project teams in different offices can interactively work on project schedules, specifications, CAD drawings and other tasks that normally require face-to-face interaction without the down time of traveling. We hope to expand this service to clients to provide better services at lower costs.
After a month's research, the Intel ProShare 200 product was selected because it appears to be growing quickly as the industry standard in PC- based platforms. ProShare uses ISDN to connect the video sites. ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a pure digital telephone circuit that can transmit data at rates up to 6 times faster than conventional analog telephone circuits. ISDN service is now widely available, so almost anyone, anywhere, can install a similar system and communicate with us.
Currently, the long distance charges on the ISDN are relatively expensive. However, costs incurred by A&A personnel traveling between branches exceed the ISDN rates. Over time, as the use for the ISDN service increases, costs are estimated to go down.

A&A Richmond Office in North Run Business Park
A&A Richmond has relocated, but not far...it's just across the street at 1622 E. Parham Road.
The larger facility will provide A&A Richmond with a more productive and efficient atmosphere. The new office is approximately 2600 square feet vs 800 square feet at the previous location. The office, in a nicely landscaped office park, has great access to major traffic corridors. It offers accommodations for seminars in an auditorium. If you're in the area please drop in...we'd love to show you around!
